Stretching - When, How and Why

Don't Stretch before you work out!

Why experts are saying that no stretching, is the best stretching.

Are you one of those people that is always stretching before any strenuous activity? A brief jog, a workout at the gym, a game of basketball......

Studies now show that stretching before these type of activities is not only not helpful, but can actually be detrimental. Stretching will cause your muscles to tighten, which is the opposite of the relaxed muscles you need for a good workout. It's like stretching out a rubber band. When you stretch it to the max it is more likely to break, or in the case of the human body, tear.

Instead of stretching out, there is a few things you can do before your activity. You are trying to slowly increase your heart rate and blood flow to your muscles. You can accomplish this by taking a light jog, working out with very light weight to start, or moving around in place for a few minutes.

At the end of your session, stretch away! You have now loosened and stretched your muscles because of your workout. Its a good idea to stretch lightly afterward to help with soreness the day after.

Stay Healthy!
