Stephanie Heath

In the last year I’ve had two whiplash injuries, and was left with intense neck pain. The pain made it difficult to read, lift things, turn my head, or even sleep. After MCU Therapy, I’m now back to work and
able to do the things I enjoy.

Learning What Makes Up a Good Diet

There is more to a good diet than just watching what food you eat or even how you eat. There is a mental and emotional side to a diet as well. If you find that you are not mentally simulated by your diet or exercise routines, you will quickly become bored with your diet and lose your commitment to it. It is easier to fail when taking on a new diet than it is to succeed, so finding a diet that can keep your interest is crucial.

The physical benefits of a healthy diet have obvious benefits of a longer, healthier life. It also helps provide you with the body you have been dreaming about, but that is not all it can do for you. It can help increase your energy levels as well as general stamina. This can be applied to so many different aspects of a man’s life that it is really up to your own imagination.

When changing your dietary habits, it is important to remember that there is an emotional side to dieting, even for men. This is commonly associated with women but it can affect men just as easily. Some men can become depressed or distant when changing their diet, as they begin to realize just how many of their favorite foods and activities they may have to give up.

It is important to learn what types of diets will work with your body and mind. You need to find a good balance of interest, food, exercise, and freedom to make the diet successful, it is not as easy as deciding to start a diet, there is far more that goes into it than that. It is important to figure out what is going to work for you, and those around you. The last thing you want to do is start a new diet and find that you are not able to maintain your lifestyle. It is human nature to pick the acceptable lifestyle of our peers than it is to stand alone, this is increasingly true when it comes to our friends and our hobbies.

Homeopathic Ways to Avoid Prostate Problems

More men are turning to homeopathic solutions for various health concerns, including their prostate. It is important to men to have a strong physical body, and in order to obtain that body you have to treat it with the proper respect. Essential vitamins and minerals that lack from your daily diet can create deficiencies within your body and make you more susceptible numerous health risks. Flaxseed oil, for example is a great source of omega 3 fatty acid, which is important for brain function and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Instead of a multivitamin, try using a whole-food mineral supplement. These are created from concentrated food sources that can make up the differences in our daily diets. They can make sure that our body is getting everything that it needs on a regular basis. You can also take these in conjunction with a multivitamin if you wish to further the effects.

You can also add green tea into your daily diet as well. Studies have proven that green tea extract inhibits the growth of prostate cancer. When made a regular part of your daily diet, green tea can be a very powerful solution for prostate health. You should consume 2 to 3 cups of green tea per day. If you are drinking refrigerated beverages that contain green tea, make sure it provides you anywhere from 100-750mg of green tea extract. If the green tea is mixed with black tea, you will want to be on the higher end of these intact values, as black tea will lower the effectiveness of the green tea.

H2OHHHHHHH

The importance on drinking water for overall body health

Water. It seems like there is a million products that have tried, but it can not be replaced. It's the purest, oldest element the human body has ever used for replenishment. Really though, how important is it to drink water? Let me tell you.

How much of it is in my body?

Let's start with the brain, it might have a little water, right? Wrong. It is almost 75% water. Your heart? nearly 80%. Starting to get the idea? I'll keep going and keep surprising you. Your skin is compiled of about 72% water.  Your blood is the highest at 83%, muscles holding about 76%  followed up by your bones that are only 22% water. Surprised? I was! Water is clearly a major part of your genetic make-up.

How often do I need it?

You can literally survive weeks without food. It won't be fun, but hey your still kickin. Water, however, mayyyybbee 7 days. Most people give up on that dream house around 5 days. Game over. Just 5 days. Not to mention after about 3 days you will probably want to pull the trigger yourself due to the side effects of dehydration.

How much do I get rid of in a day?

Your body sweats, urinates, and breathes out about 3 quarts of water per day! Almost all processes in the human body require water, so at the rate we lose it and use it, we need to dedicate time to replenish our body.

Water actually protects your body.

A well hydrated body helps prevent other issues! Water actually helps keep dirt and grime out of our eyes. It lubricates our joints and prevents stiffness and aches. It helps keep our mouth, tongue and lips moist. It also helps your body break down and digest foods.

Okay I'm done writing! Hopefully this helps you understand why your parents always pushed water on you! Grab a glass!

Best Ways to Get Outside as a Family

Chiropractic Care in Anchorage
Sometimes it can become difficult to find interesting or fun things to do as a family. With the increased desire for children to play video games or use social networking sites, it has become harder and harder to do things as a family. Do not give up hope, because you can still find a wide variety of things that you and your family can do together outdoors.

Walking and biking are great family activities!

Anchorage Chiropractic
You can begin taking walks or nature hikes as a family. Pick one weekend a month and drive out to a nature reserve. Walking the trails and observing the animals can be a lot of fun, as well as informative. You can also opt for family bike rides using the same types of trails and nature reserves. If any of your children are involved with after school sports, you can enjoy them together as a family. Attending the child’s games or practicing with the child on the weekends as a family, will ensure that everyone gets out of the house and starts exercising while also having fun.

Get social

You can also host a couple of cookouts or barbeques. Inviting your family and friends to attend will help give your children and spouse a wider variety of people to socialize with, as well as different ideas of things to do. When the cookout is finished and everyone is leaving, you and your family can huddle around the smoldering coals and roast a couple of marshmallows and laugh about the days events.

Get over your pain and get on with life

Painlessness Achieved
Man With Lower Back Pain

Pain sucks. Whether it is caused by an accident at work, a past sports injury still lingering, or is caused by recent surgeries or treatments, pain can really put a damper on your day. So what can we do to alleviate the pain? There are plenty of ways to cope with and treat pain. As always, make sure to consult your physician before starting any medical or supplemental regime and always follow all printed instructions on the labels of medications and supplements you may take.

Natural Remedies

"Nearly 40 percent of arthritis patients reduced their pain by half after using a topical capsaicin cream for a month, and 60 percent of neuropathy patients achieved the same after 2 months, according to a University of Oxford study." - 8 natural pain relievers. According to this article, Capsaicin, Zyflamend, and Arnica will all three help joints stay soft, supple, and lubricated and helps to ward off the pain caused by arthritis and aging. Natural remedies are usually pretty safe to start with and have been thought to help a certain percentage of people feel less pain in their lives. Be wary, however, of bold claims made by supplemental companies; they also have a responsibility to answer to their stock holders and the supplemental industry is loosely regulated by the FDA so there can be a lot of inaccurate information floating around. Always refer all questions about supplements to your physician.

Prescription Strength Medication

Prescription Medication Bottle and MedicationPrescription pain medication is prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain. While highly effective, most pain treatment medication carries the risk of dependency with extended and/or abuse of the medication. Never deviate from the specific instructions given to you by your physician and pharmacist as to how this type of pain medication is to be taken. Remember, prescriptions are only for you and should never be given to somebody who has not been prescribed to use it. Prescription medication should always be used under supervision of a physician so that maximum benefit can be gained by its use.

In Office Pain Treatments

Chiropractor working on patient
Sometimes your physician may recommend that you get in-office treatment for your pain. These treatments could include chiropractic treatment, interventional pain treatment, and holistic medicine. Not all in-office procedures is better than another and only with the proper diagnosis of your pain will determine what kind of treatment is necessary. Chiropractic care involves musculoskeletal readjustments and massage therapy. This can remediate slipped vertebra discs, pinched nerves, Sciatica, and more. Interventional pain treatment involves using injections, or "blocks," to help dull and numb the pain at the nerves that are involved. This treatment is an alternative to chiropractic care when mobility and older age cause discomfort in a chiropractic setting. Holistic medicine includes ancient eastern medicine with modern techniques. Acupuncture is a great example of holistic medicine and has been effective in helping thousands of people live a pain free life.

There are many options available when you are faced with chronic pain. Only your physician can help you determine what course of action to take when dealing with pain. Be safe, be smart, be pain free.

Whiplash - Symptoms and Treatments

Whiplash

Good news for whiplash patients

More than 3 million Americans suffer from whiplash every year – and that’s just from vehicle accidents. Whiplash can also be caused by other types of collisions, such as playing sports or falling on the ice.

Whiplash is an injury to the neck caused by the sudden movement of the head backward, forward or sideways. Whiplash injuries can result in stretched or torn neck muscles or ligaments, bulging or ruptured discs, misaligned vertebrae, and the loss of the neck’s normal forward curve.

Apart from neck pain, whiplash symptoms may include:
  • Headaches
  • Upper back pain
  • Pain between the shoulder blades
  • Shoulder pain
  • Pain, numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
  • Low back pain
  • Loss of mobility / stiffness
  • Dizzines
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Blurred vision

Most often with whiplash injuries, pain occurs immediately or is felt within a few days, but sometimes whiplash symptoms may not appear for weeks or even months after an accident.

Often, whiplash injuries can result in chronic neck pain. For example, one study showed that nearly 40 percent of people with whiplash still experienced pain seven years later. Behind chronic back pain, neck pain is the next disability epidemic, with whiplash as the leading cause of neck pain.
The good news is there are several treatment options available for whiplash.

Whiplash treatments include:
  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Physical / occupational therapy
  • Rehabilitation to improve muscle strength
  • Massage therapy
  • Multi-cervical unit (MCU) therapy

Taking the Pressure Off of Learning to Be Flexible

Men's Corner

Learning Why Flexibility in Men is So Important

When most men think about flexibility, they instantly think about their spouses or some sort of circus act. While this is obviously a negative way to interpret this subject, it is a proven fact. Rarely will a man consider his own flexibility, when in fact it is something everyone should be concerned with. Stretching is a key part of establishing good flexibility.

Stretching is proven to help improve circulation through the entire body. This helps speed up recovery to the body from strain or injury. It also increases blood flow to your muscles. This increases the amount of nourishment that the muscle receives and increases the amount of impurities that are removed from the body.

Stretching and good flexibility can also decrease the amount of lower back and neck pain that most men suffer from. When our muscles tighten they become strained, they put these parts of our body into tension or various periods of pain and discomfort. Stretching will help increase the mobility of these regions, and the increased oxygen within our muscles and blood will help prevent them from becoming over worked and strained.

It can also help with your coordination. This can help improve our athletic prowess as well as our self esteem due to this increased performance. This also helps to eliminate the risk of falls or injury when we do fall. It also increases our cardiovascular health, which directly improves our health and performance. All of these factors can be easily witnessed through dozens of applications throughout of daily routines.

The purpose of a general multivitamin is to help the body supplement the necessary vitamins, minerals and nutrients that are missing from our daily meals. Obviously this will not help to remove any of the unnecessary or unhealthy items that we have put into our body throughout the day, but it is a good first step. A balanced Multivitamin will ensure that regardless of your diet, your body is getting the recommended daily amounts of a vast majority of your essential vitamins and minerals.

This has proven to be very effective for women who live very active and stressful lives. While it is not a cure-all solution, it is far better than doing absolutely nothing. It will help prevent you from getting routinely sick or hurt. It will also help to satisfy additional cravings for food by your body, in an attempt to get the nutrients it needs.

Stretching - When, How and Why

Don't Stretch before you work out!

Why experts are saying that no stretching, is the best stretching.

Are you one of those people that is always stretching before any strenuous activity? A brief jog, a workout at the gym, a game of basketball......

Studies now show that stretching before these type of activities is not only not helpful, but can actually be detrimental. Stretching will cause your muscles to tighten, which is the opposite of the relaxed muscles you need for a good workout. It's like stretching out a rubber band. When you stretch it to the max it is more likely to break, or in the case of the human body, tear.

Instead of stretching out, there is a few things you can do before your activity. You are trying to slowly increase your heart rate and blood flow to your muscles. You can accomplish this by taking a light jog, working out with very light weight to start, or moving around in place for a few minutes.

At the end of your session, stretch away! You have now loosened and stretched your muscles because of your workout. Its a good idea to stretch lightly afterward to help with soreness the day after.

Stay Healthy!

Living Drug Free

Living Drug Free
A Healthy Me is Drug Free! Banner

Living drug free is the key to a healthy lifestyle. Allowing drugs to enter our lives can only lead to bad decisions, deteriorating health, and ultimately death. Learning to avoid the the trappings of this dangerous lifestyle is the key to success.

From advertisements and movies to celebrities and their addictions, lifestyles involving drug use can often look cool and acceptable. Kids and teenagers are often the group who is the most easily influenced by the drug culture.

How can we prevent this? The answer is education. We need to educate people about the dangers of drugs and most importantly we need to educate people on how to say NO when pressured to use drugs.

Below are some tips to remember:

  • Be brave and don't be afraid to say "NO" when offered drugs or alcohol.
  • If you have a drug problem talk to a school counselor, or a minister/pastor, many of them have access to groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Alateen, or N.A. As well as other rehab programs. Help is out there.
  • Talk to those you trust about your temptation, they'll understand and help you avoid it.
  • Never take drugs. Medicine is considered a drug but never abuse your medication.
  • If you have reached the point of over-dependency to it, that you can't go to work without using it, try to gradually set yourself off from it.
  • Educate yourself. Knowing what can happen is half the battle. D.A.R.E. and Above the Influence can help you understand the possible drugs out there and what they can do to your body.

Where can I find information about living drug free?

Degenerative Disc / Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative Disc Disease - What It Is:

Chiropractor in Anchorage
To understand degenerative disc disease, it is first important to understand the make-up of your spine. In between each vertebra in your spine is a disc, which acts as a spacer and shock absorber. When healthy, these discs are flexible, like a wet sponge.

But injuries or just aging can cause the discs to lose their fluid content and wear thin – beginning the degenerative disc disease process. This allows the vertebrae to rub together, becoming rough, worn down – or even fused together. The result is a degenerative disc.

Degenerative discs are at the root of many other spinal problems, such as instability, stenosis and spondylosis.

Where Degenerative Disc Disease Occurs:

Degenerative discs, which are the result of degenerative disc disease, can appear in the:
  • Neck (cervical spine)
  • Low back (lumbar spine)
  • Middle and upper back (thoracic spine)

Having Friends and Keeping Positive Influences Close

Better Health Pain & Wellness Centers
When you think about it, we all want people to share our experiences with. It does not matter if they are good experiences or bad, the more people that we can share these experiences with, the better we feel. This holds true for both men and women. It does not matter how young or old you are, the effects of these relationships are more powerful than you may have considered. It is human nature to be social, and while some of us are not as outgoing as others, we all still long for some form of companionship.
We try to surround ourselves with people we can relate with and who can relate to us. These positive influences keep us from feeling as though it is “me against the world”. These relationships help us all grow and become better people. We learn from our collective mistakes and go out of our way to help each other. It is this profound relationship that makes us so unique when compared to various species of animals throughout the world.
We have all had to turn to a friend at one time or another for a strong shoulder to cry on or vent our frustrations to. This ability to connect with people allows us to keep our sanity. When you are completely isolated you run the risk of losing parts of yourself. You forget the intricacies that make human-beings so different from everything else. It is far more than just having a pair of thumbs and the ability to use tools. It is the ability to work together and help one another to overcome various situations.

Living Healthy: Preventative Measures

Living Healthy - Take Action before you have to!

We have all been in the situation where you HAVE to go to a doctor or specialist because a problem has worsened to the point where you need professional help. In most cases, preventative measures can completely extract the need of this individual. Let me quickly explain how taking a few preventive measures with your health can greatly help in the long run.

Eating Right -

Whenever we get on the "heath" kick, the first thing that comes to our mind is what we eat. As it should be. Eating the proper foods for your body type as well as daily regimen, is quite possibly one of the biggest factors of enjoying a long, healthy life. However, you don't need to turn into a granola and make sure everything that goes in your mouth is as close to pure air as possible. For most people, simply increasing your water intake, as well as the amount of fruits and vegetables you eat, can make a huge difference. Just always be aware of what it is your eating, as well as what benefits that food has for your body. If it takes you more than .5 second to determine if it's healthy or not, it's not.

Exercising -

This, just like eating right, is one of the easiest ways to impact your current health the greatest. Even a short jog once a week will put most people in a much better position physically than they currently are. An important part of exercising is stretching. A lot of ex-athletes find themselves taking multiple trips per week to a local Chiropractor because they did not the prep their body properly before intense workouts. Unless you want to see Dr. Wells every week, prep your body right! Warm- up, stretch, work-out, and cool down after.

Vitamins -

This is probably the most under-utilized way of helping your body. There is no way for you to give your body everything it needs, every single day. Vitamins can greatly increase your bodies intake of critical nutrients, which helps prevent deterioration as you age. Taking vitamins and minerals really is one of the easiest things to do when trying to keep your body running strong. It's a wonder to me why more people don't take 10 seconds a day, to add years of healthy living.

Follow these guidelines, and you will without a doubt improve the current state of your health, moreover; prevent costly issues in the future.

Quickie Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients:
  • 8 ounces crescent roll dough, 8 roll tube
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange juice
Directions:
  1. Unroll dough in one long rectangle and press to seal perforations.
  2. Combine cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle over dough.
  3. Roll up jelly roll style (like a log) starting from the short end and pinch seam to seal.
  4. Using a serrated knife slice into 4 equal slices. (I use unwaxed dental floss threading underneath the 'log' and then crossing the ends above the 'log'(floss makes an O around the dough, floss ends form a V) Pull ends to draw floss through to cut dough. Makes a cleaner cut).
  5. Place rolls pinched side down in un-greased muffin tin.
  6. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes or until brown. Cool for 5 minutes then transfer to wire rack.
  7. Mix powdered sugar and orange juice to make a thin glaze. Drizzle over the warm rolls and serve.

Learning What Good Fats Men Need

Good Fats for Men
When trying to lose weight or tone up your body, most men will attempt to cut all forms of fat out of their diets. They replace these fats with proteins and various carbohydrates. It is important to remember that our bodies need a certain amount of fat per day and depriving your body of these fats can have serious side effects. Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids for example, are needed for many of the brains functions as well as key elements of the male body, such as reproduction. A lot of people used to blame drugs such as steroids for the frequent results of erectile dysfunction when used by men, and while this was proven to be true, the lack of the proper fat levels also contributed to these results.

Be sure to follow up with your physician before starting a new diet...

Good Fats for Men
Before cutting fat out of your diet completely, you should speak with your physician and ask for any information he or she can provide you with concerning proper diet plans. A lot of men will try to supplement the vitamins and minerals their body needs by taking a dietary supplement of a one-a-day vitamin. While this can help our body in amazing ways, without the proper fat levels, your body will not be able to absorb all of the good vitamins and minerals you are attempt to put into it. Fat is one of the top three sources of energy for our body and it is also very important for protecting the organs of our bodies. It provides the body with a soft, insulating layer that helps regulate the temperature of the organ but also prevent damage or injury.
